"Fearless" A Book Review

Buy
I actually read this new book by Max Lucado some time ago & then did not get around to pulling this together until now. For some reason the book did not rock me as I had expected it would. I love this author because his writing is very conversational & full of stories to illustrate his message. But this book on being fearless did not show me anything really new. That may be because fighting fear is an old & ongoing battle for me. I have conquered so much over the years that the book may be old ground for me, but surely not for many others.

This paragraph sums up the main message of the book....

"As awe of Jesus expands, fears of life diminish. A big God translates into big courage. A small view of God generates no courage. A limp. puny, fireless Jesus has no power over cancer cells, corruption, identity theft, stock-market crashes, or global calamity. A packageable , portable Jesus might fit well in a purse or on a shelf, but He does nothing for your fears. "

We all know people who seem to focus on the many bad & horrible things that COULD happen. The nightly news is a major culprit to fear, that's how they get you to stay tuned beyond the commercial. This book addresses that & could be very helpful & freeing for fear motivated people.

Book Review

In reviewing the Christianity Today book, "Faith & Pop Culture" I have to admit that I lost interest & actually forgot to finish the small study guide & write my review. But it may be of interest to small groups that are looking for a specific subject to discuss over a matter of weeks together.
The 8 chapters include these topics:
  • Are movies the art form of our day? And if so, how do they connect with Christian faith?
  • How can great books pave the way to faith?
  • Do we take sports seriously enough?
  • With hundreds of channels screaming for our attention, how do we decide what or whether to watch?
  • Must all entertainment Christians enjoy be "family friendly"?
  • Can violence be entertainment for Christians?
  • Can Christians influence the entertainment industry?
  • It's the cry of our culture, but is it compatible with a life of faith?

I was pleased to find the collection of writers for this study guide did not all agree with one another. The book gave differing views to stimulate a group discussion. I also was relieved to find that it was not a book about how totally horrible media was & that true people of faith should run away from it completely. The writers actually admitted to watching & loving TV & going to a variety of movie styles. It is possible that my reluctance to complete this assignment was a pre-conceived idea that the book would be telling Christians to turn off their televisions & spend their evenings praying for the "far-left media monsters". This book did not do that at all. It could be a stimulating discussion starter. Unfortunately, in my experience most people who would come to a group that gathered for this subject specifically, would be of the mind mentioned above.

A Book Review for Thomas Nelson Books

A Review of My Little Girl, by Tim McGraw
December 8, 2008

This brightly colored & eye-catching children’s’ book is a fun one to read aloud to your daughter. It is meant to be read aloud by daddies because it is all about a little girl who gets to spend a fun day with her daddy. At first she thinks they are going to do something spectacular & she feels a bit disappointed when she finds that he has no big exciting plans for their day together. But her loving, playful dad knows how to make even ordinary errands into an unexpected adventure.

The illustrations by Julia Denos are my favorite part of the book! The little girl in the drawings is dressed silly & realistic in a tutu over a shirt along with a play tiara & hiking boots. The characters in the illustrations are very fluid, colorful & positive. My Little Girl is a cute, inspiring book by country music singer, Tim McGraw who has three daughters. Any fan of his or his wife Faith Hill would really enjoy having this book for their children in the house even though it is a bit over priced in my opinion.
