| Layla is an 8 month old Spanador |
Our quiet and ordered empty nest has been turned upside down this last weekend. If anyone believes that being married over 30 years leads to boredom and predictability, point them my way because I am still in shock at what my Hubs has gone and did! (Everything in me wants to correct that bad grammar, but its funny so I'm trying to leave it.)
Out of the blue this past month I have caught Hubs looking at something shocking on his Kindle Fire. Dog websites! What?
Is this the same man who refused to back me up when our kids had pets and they "forgot" to feed or care for them? His stance was usually the following: "Hey you're the one that wanted pets. Wasn't MY idea!" Gee thanks Honey.
One day a few weeks ago he shows me a puppy on craigslist and says, "what do you think of this little dog?" I wrinkled my brow and agreed that the dog was adorable and walked away wondered where my real husband was.
He admitted that seeing dogs at work all the time, because Home Depot is pet friendly, had got him thinking about getting a dog again, a smallish one that could be IN THE HOUSE!
That last part really made me tip my head to the side like a puppy would do when it heard something brand new and strange.
I mean, here we are barely making enough money to feed the two of us. What in the world is he thinking? I am so confused!
I have always loved dogs, had them growing up and I may have let it slip recently that if he dies before I do, I was going to get myself a small house dog to keep me company. (In a year of two family deaths and being over 50 years old leads to these kind of conversations.) But still, this is just so uncharacteristic of this man who loves order, routine and not spending money.
The end, or I should say, the beginning of this story is that on February 18, our 34th wedding anniversary we picked up this sweet little girl called Layla. She is worth some $$ but the young family did not charge us a penny to give her a good home that could give her lots of attention. She is a Spaniel/Labrador mix, thus she is a Spanador. Which I agree is a much better name than the alternative; Labracock!
Happily she is already potty trained and will sit, stay and come pretty well. We are determined to have an obedient dog this time around so will be working with her. After one day here, she already does not attack our pillows anymore. Yay! She is no larger than a Cocker Spaniel (though she looks larger in these shots) and has great short hair like a Labrador.
We love her already and she has totally bonded with Hubs. He is the clear Alpha male and she follows him everywhere and even sits on his lap while he is on his Kindle.
Me? I am still in shock and loving every minute of it.
